Estate planning at Balance Wealth.

We are not lawyers and have no legal background, but we do have a lot of experience in this area, and due to the depth of relationships we have with clients, will often know about what changes need to happen to estate planning documents before your lawyers do.

We can work with your lawyers, or simply make a recommendation to you that something needs to be updated or reviewed.

As part of all of our ongoing reviews with clients, we can review:

  • Wills – to ensure that your executors are appropriate, all specific bequests are covered, and that you’re leaving money to who you want to. We can also pick up on things that might be open to challenge from others, as the last thing you want is a family argument about money following your death.
  • Powers of Attorney – making sure you have these in place, that the attorneys are appropriate and remain appropriate over time.
  • Trusts – ensuring that your beneficiaries are correct, that you have a memorandum of wishes in place, and helping to update this regularly or as things change, ensuring that you have successor trustees nominated if appropriate, and making sure that everyone you want to protect with the trust, is getting the right protection.
  • Living Wills – we have some templates to share with clients for drafting up a living will in order to help family understand your wishes.
  • Charitable Giving – whether in your will or during your lifetime, we can work with you to ensure that your money is going to the causes you want it to. We work with The Gift Trust which allows donor directed funds that you continue to manage in your lifetime but can also give away in your lifetime. We also are well connected with Community Foundations if you’d prefer to establish an endowment fund.
